The Royal Botanic Gardens is a place of natural beauty, where people come for peace, relaxation, education, and to learn more about plants and horticulture. The surrounding parkland of the Domain is a place for sport, entertainment and recreation. Opening hours: The Domain is open 24 hours a day every day of the year, and entry is free except for special or ticketed events.

Symphony in the Domain and Jazz in the Domain are free events of the Sydney Festival, held yearly in January. Virtually thousands of spectators enjoy these open-air concerts with a picnic and a bottle of wine. The crowds are overpowering though, comparable only to the ones attending the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
